What you do before and after your spray tan is critical to ensure you have the best and longest results possible. I like to call is the 80/20 rule.
80% of a good spray tan is the pre and post protocols you do at home to your skin.
20% is the spray tan artist and solution they use.
Here is my guide to ensure you have the best results possible:
Days before Spray Tanning.
Exfoliate in the shower and moisturizing directly after for 2-3 days prior to your tan. (List of approved soaps and lotions below)
Exfoliation should be done with a washcloth or nylon exfoliating glove. (Loofas and scrubs are not recommended)
Do not add use any Vitamin A (Retin A), oils for hydration or receive a massage a few days prior since this will create a barrier.
Day before Spray Tanning.
Shaving should be done the DAY OR NIGHT PRIOR to your tan. This will reduce open hair follicles and the appearance of hair spots in the tan.
Your final shower and exfoliation should be 3-12 hours before your appointment. If you’re washing your hair, WASH ANY HAIR PRODUCTS FROM YOUR SKIN. Shampoos and conditioners create a barrier on the skin.
DO NOT moisturize, use deodorants or fragrances.
Day of Spray Tan.
Wear dark, loose clothing since the tan can transfer and may not washout. Avoid tight waist bands and tight bras. Loose footwear or flip flops should be worn.
You may be sprayed fully nude or you may wear an old swimsuit, old undergarments to be sprayed in. Disposable panties can be provided as well.
Please bring a towel if you have light colored car seat. Bring an umbrella if it is raining.
YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SHOWER, SWIM OR SWEAT FOR 8-12 HOURS FOR A REGULAR TAN AND 2-4 HOURS FOR A RAPID TAN.
Post Spray Tan:
Your first shower you should be water ONLY. Use lukewarm water and your hands to wash off the excess tanning solution for several minutes. If you are streaky then you have not removed all the solution.
Avoid washing your hair. It will take up to 24 hours for your tan to fully develop.
Pat dry with a clean towel (do not rub)
Apply APPROVED moisturize to your damp skin and enjoy your results!
Your tan should last 10-14 days. For best results use approved body washes and apply approved moisturizer daily.
Avoid exfoliating, loofahs and scrubs. Skincare with AHAs, BHAs, Retin-A (salicylic acid, glycolic acid and retinol) will remove the tan from your face and neck more quickly.
Hot tubs, swimming pools and the ocean will affect the life of your tan.
